Thompson's LLC is a family owned business with many years experience working directly in this field. Our company was created as an LLC for the sole purpose of providing a vehicle to share the THOMPSON'S SHOWER PROTECTOR with fellow amputees, and those with a medical need for leg protection while showering - such as post knee surgery patients, or with bandages or wraps on their legs that must be kept dry.
We originally invented this just for my use. As a Right Below the Knee Amputee (RBKA), I was unhappy with everything that I was seeing on the market. I was also tired of having to carry my walker with me whenever I traveled to make sure that I had something to hang on to in the shower.
I had tried most protectors available , from pump-up items made mainly for swimming, (it was like wearing a bathing suit in the shower - it can be done......but why??), to some resembling trash bags - and yes, even trash bags themselves.
My biggest complaint with the "bag" or "boot" approach , (aside from most being heavy, bulky, and still leaky), was that it required me to stand on slippery vinyl in a wet-soapy shower. Even a roughed up bottom is still vinyl. This definitely bothered me. (Haven't you ever seen a rough tire slip on a wet or snowy pavement?)
Having owned and operated our own sewing factory some years before - that manufactured hospital items - we set to work to design something that would work for me - something that was SIMPLE-DURABLE-RELIABLE. After much consultation with my prosthetist, and others in the O&P field, along with the manufacturer of my own foot, I was assured that the water spray on the foot would do no harm.
I was told that just the opposite was true....washing the shell of the foot from time to time was good for it because this removed dirt and grime that was more harmful than any clean shower spray. This sure made good sense to me. I also discovered that my prosthetic foot gave me the same feel of security on the floor as my natural foot. That was all I needed to know.
The purpose was to keep the water out of the socket, off of the metal parts, and from inside the foot. It did not have to go around and under the foot to do that. What it needed was a "RAINCOAT".........And that in essence is just what the THOMPSON'S SHOWER PROTECTOR is: "An open bottom, wrap around, waterproof vinyl covering" - a "RAINCOAT" for the prosthetic , (or wounded), leg.
About 8 years ago, my wife and I were persuaded to return to business and share this with others with the same need as I. Today, the THOMPSON'S SHOWER PROTECTOR has been sold in all 50 of the United States, as well as the countries of Canada, Wales, England, Ireland, France and Australia.
As far as I am concerned, the THOMPSON'S SHOWER PROTECTOR, is the most efficient and yet simplest product of it's kind on the market. I believe that our "COMMENTS" page will attest to that.
